grayscale PDF from PDFTranscoder

Is there any way to force the PDFTranscoder to output a flattened grayscale PDF ? Somewhere I seem to have picked up the notion that the default output for the PDFTranscoder is grayscale unless there are rgb images or coloured text. The SVG doc has just black text and grayscale PNGs, ( some which are transparent ).
