Help byte-compiling!

Hi,

I've just got a new account, and I cannot seem to get bbdb to compile
with VM.  I keep getting this error:

While compiling toplevel forms in file
/home/s2168409/.elisp/bbdb-hooks.el:
  !! File error (("Cannot open load file" "vm-message"))
Done

I've got my VMDIR set properly in the Makefile, why can't it open it?
BTW, I am using FSF Emacs v19.27, VM 5.72 beta, and BBDB v1.50.
Please help!!
