Thank you for the suggestion, it is now working here as
well.
For the record, this is what I did to start using
mail-mode-abbrev-table:
1. Opened the file ~/.abbrev_defs
2. Renamed "my-message-mode-abbrev-table" to
"mail-mode-abbrev-table"
I also removed the hook I had in my .emacs to set up the
local-abbrev-table in message mode which is no longer needed.
There is still some broken code somewhere (most likely not
in BBDB, though), but this setup is working just fine.
The thread archived at
<http://www.gnus.org/list-archives/ding/199712/msg00254.html>
from the ding mailing list suggests that mailabbrev.el does
some unexpected things to local-abbrev-table, but this is
way over my head.
