This is with BBDB version 2.35 ($Date: 2005/09/06 21:39:51 $). However,
I found the problem was a pesky "q" character that I must have
accidentally typed while switching buffers, which got saved when
quitting GNUS/Emacs. I inspected the ~/.bbdb, found it right at the end
of the file, removed it, saved the file and the problem was gone. I
have to find a way to hide the ~/.bbdb buffer to avoid accidentally
typing something there. Thanks.
