Mmh, first of all, I like bbdb. In the second place I think it is a rather intransparent behemoth. For every tiny `problem' you have to make rather huge efforts to `solve' it. Thirdly I `solved' this `problem' by writing mail aliases for groups into ~/.mailrc.
