I handle it by backing up the file first by opening the terminal and entering:
sudo cp /etc/httpd/httpd.conf /etc/httpd/httpd.conf.backup This copies httpd.conf into a file called httpd.conf.backup. Then I make my changes to the httpd.conf file in BBEdit. Then I test the confguration file by entering: apachectl configtest This will tell Apache to parse the config file and report any errors. If there are problems, you can undo your changes because you still have httpd.conf open in BBEdit. Then I restart Apache from the terminal by entering: sudo apachectl restart or, if it's a live server, sudo apachectl graceful By restarting Apache from the command line you can see any errors that Apache might encounter when it starts up. Usually there won't be any because it's already been tested by configtest, but that only tests the config file's syntax. There can still be other problems like missing mod files and such, but you can still undo your changes and restart Apache because you still have httpd.conf open in BBEdit. So while I always back up httpd.conf before I start, I never need to use the backup, but it's still nice to know it's there.
