Basically, the operation has no effect, because "&" in the replacement
pattern means "the entire match". So it replaced "&" with "&".
nah, I think it arose when some nerds were acting as roadies. on
being told to go and get the spare amplifier, they found it had
been stolen. While they were standing there puzzled, someone
called to ask what had happened, so they answered...
