That gesture enables line numbers for the displayed document, overriding the globabl preference. To always display line numbers, go to Preferences->Text Status Display and make sure the "Show line numbers" box is enabled. This will only change newly opened documents, unless you also go to Preferences->Text Files and uncheck the "Options settings" box in the HOnor saved state group.
