It's interesting to note that the iWork apps in the iPad can read in Microsoft Office files as well as iWorks for OS X files, but can output only iWorks files or PDFs. It seems as if connecting to the Mac is done through Bluetooth or via a WI-FI network, like an iPhone would do. I can't recall seeing anything about a hardware connection.
I would be VERY interested in a simplified (if necessary) BBEdit for the iPad.
