Git does not require a server, by the way. It will work with remote 
repositories, but if you just want to try it out (or you're not worried about 
backups or sharing the project), you can just run it locally. If you're really 
using it only for yourself, it's a better choice than Subversion. But if you've 
got a Subversion-controlled project in production, you're right that you 
shouldn't switch it.
