Hello everyone,

...for those of you who are unfamiliar with the term, "threadwhacking" (or "threadjacking") refers to the practice of replying to a message in an existing thread with something completely unrelated, frequently while changing the subject line at the same time.

(Just like I did in this very message, to prove the point. The list mom is here to preserve democracy, not to practice it.)

Apart from being a breach of netiquette, threadwhacking buries your post where it may not be seen except by accident.

It also confuses readers who are using the Google Groups web interface, as well as readers who are using email clients that pay attention to the email reference headers that are used to connect posts into a thread.

If you want to bring up an issue that is not related to the current thread, start a new message from scratch, *without replying to a message in the thread*.

If you aren't sure whether what you're about to say is related to the current thread, start a new message from scratch, *without replying to a message in the thread*.

If you can't remember the posting address for the list, put this in your address book (Contacts.app or other):

    BBEdit Talk <bbedit@googlegroups.com>

No "mea culpa" or apology is necessary. If you didn't know before, you do now, and ignorance will no longer be a valid defense.

Grumpily yours,

R.

(p.s. If anyone feels the temptation to argue about this, please don't give in.)

(p.p.s. when I sent this, Mailsmith issued a warning, per the attached.)

Someday I'll look back on all this and laugh... until they sedate me.
