This may be a little bit off-topic, but it is related. Photoshop was having a 
very similar issue before the recent two PS updates in which if the user 
selected a file format in which to save the Photoshop document, the file 
extension in the name field was NOT changing to the designated  file format. It 
was remaining .psd. So, the user had to manually type in the correct file 
extension before saving the file.

So my point is, this was/is indeed an OS bug which has affected multiple apps, 
apparently including BBEdit.
