Lois is heavily involved in the efforts by SAGE to develop a
vendor neutral system administrator certification process and is in a
very good position to tell us its status and why it's important to
your average system administrator. This effort could be an important
first step in defining system administration as a profession and
lessening the control that vendors have exerted in defining what it
means to be a system administrator.
Lois has just been elected treasurer for SAGE's parent organization
USENIX as well. Because USENIX's annual conference is the week of
June 12th, our meeting date was moved for this month to the first
Wednesday of the month. Lois will take her place on the USENIX board
at that conference.

REPEAT: This meeting is NOT on our regularily scheduled date. It is
on the FIRST Wednesday of the month: June 5th. Our next meeting will
be on the regular date in July.

Abstract:
Lois Bennett will present an overview of the SAGE Certification
program to date and share some of the plans for the future. Followed
by a lively discussion of the pros and cons of certification in
general and SAGE Certification specifically.
SAGE Certification is a multi-platform program created by and for
system administrators. The program came into existence through SAGE
as a response to industry demands for vigorous, job-specific
evaluation. Certification of system administration professionals is a
growing industry, and the purpose of SAGE certification is to enhance
the professional standing and technical rigor of system
administrators. SAGE certification represents the highest quality
professional examination that is practically oriented and focuses on
both core competence as well as specific system administration tasks.
The testing is of merit to system administrators, and as such, SAGE
Certification is a distinctive certification program for system
administrators.
