Does this mean that I need to use wpa-supplicant?

It's a DELL E1505 laptop. Dell specification says:

"Dell Wireless 1390 802.11g Mini-Card (54Mbps)"

It has a key combination to turn it on/off, and the LED indicator.
After you menioned it, I did some testing.
1. Initially, when I boot up to Gentoo the LED is on.
2. When I do "modprobe bcm43xx", the LED is still on.
3. When I do "iwconfig", to check on wireless interface, the LED is still on.
4. When I do "ifconfig eth1 up", the LED goes off.

I didn't ry to turn the LED back on yet...
