I know how you feel. Today, I dug out the frequency analyzer to see how the 
power looked. The 4311, 
which has the highest transfer numbers, has the lowest peak amplitude - about 
-70 dBm. The 4306 has 
amplitudes of -50 dBm, but the frequency spread is quite large and asymmetric. 
Although it is set 
for channel 1, there is a tail that extends to channel 7. The 4318 has even 
higher power - it 
saturates the detector as does the AP, which is at about the same distance as 
the laptops.

If I bump up the power from 6.75 to 8.75 dBm, the maximum throughput of the 
4311 reaches over 20 
Mbs, which is higher than Windows gets for the same setup.
