Yes,you can hide a text object based on a database field being NULL.

In Crystal Reports,activate the design tab Right mouse click on the text field 
and select Format Field.Click on the Common tab.click on the formula edit 
button next to Surpress (this allows you to edit the field surpression formula )

The formula you want to use will be something like this 
IsNull(Tablename.Fieldname)

If the TableName.FieldName database field is Null then the text field will be 
surpressed (invisible)

but,the tooltip text will still be visible if you hover your mouse over the 
invisible field while viewing the report in the preview pane.

if you want to surpress the tool tip text too,then add the same suppression 
formula to the firmula edit button next to tool tip text in the common tab.
