I'm going to get him started with GNU radio (hopefully that will be easy), and when you get the Beagleboard port finished, have him migrage over to that platform.
They'll sell you a copy. Maybe you have a copy at the library? Basically, it is pretty high level, but it should be a great starting point for someone.
