For Python fans, I've found the PyBBIO library to very accessible: https://github.com/alexanderhiam/PyBBIO
You'll probably need to ssh into the BBB at some point. You could run Python and Twisted and make one of those fancy "web apps" the kids are talking about. Then you could do everything from the desktop.
