but I would like to add...
assuming you want all whitespace replaced with "<td></td>" I think this
should work.
$test1 =~ s#\s+#<td></td>#g
^ ^^^
| |
| |-> \s is whitspace, + is one or more
|
|-> Don't forget to bind the pattern to the data or the s/// thing
operates on $_
