Sorry to contribute to this off-topic thread, but I have useful information.

Verily, on Thursday June 14, 2001, the Sainted Derek Harding spake:

    If a pseudo-terminal has been allocated (normal login session), the user
         can disconnect with "~.".  (Quotes added by jjf).

This is directly analogous to telnet's '^-]' escape character.  SSH has other
'~' sequences as well.
