Agnostic clear command...

Someone posted this to the list a couple of weeks back.
It does not appear to be working....
I cannot seem to find the reference to $^0

my $clear;
if ($^O =~ /mswin/i || $^O =~ /dos/i) {
 $clear = `cls`;
} 
elsif ($^O eq 'linux') {
 $clear = `clear`;
}
