Connecting to a server...

I've gone through Programming Perl, Perl Cookbook, and Learning Perl, but I just can't 
seem to get a grasp on how to connect to a server across TCP/IP. I'm OK with FTP, but 
TCP/IP just isn't sinking in.  I'd be so very grateful for how to connect to a server 
in layman's terms. I'm OK with taking a reference to a website that might explain it 
for beginners.
