Yes, that was certainly a challenge to follow!

Might I conclude, then, that a lot of those Perl extensions are of dubious 
value, if one takes maintainability into account?  Or are there situations in 
which they're considered essential?  (I realize that's a matter of opinion, but 
I am curious to learn when or whether it's advisable to have those constructs 
in my "toolbox" at all.)
