the canonical book about Perl is Programming Perl by Larry Wall et al. There
were three editions so far, and the third one covers perl-5.6.x and is showing
its age. There is going to be a fourth edition covering perl-5.14.x soon:

Note that I think the book Modern Perl by chromatic (freely available online
under a Creative Commons by-nc-sa licence) would be better as an introduction,
at least if you have previous experience with different programming languages
(which you do):
