Linux is free and easy to install on just about ANY platform (including a 486, depending on the version you're running) and will reasonably approximate which ever version of Unix you are running.
www.redhat.com www.debian.org www.mandrake.com -or- www.linuxiso.org has ISO disk images for any version of Linux of BSD you'll want. If you don't want to use Linux, use one of the BSDs: www.freebsd.org - easiest BSD to use www.openbsd.org - most secure BSD to use, but limited platforms www.netbsd.org - runs on any hardware you can imagine.... Furthermore, Apache is free and easy to install and set up, with thousands of tutorials on how to install mod_perl, or use Perl with CGI/BIN. www.apache.org So I would suggest that you use a Linux and Apache combination on a spare machine lying around. Truly. You'll feel better about moving the code to the Unix server later, because the behavior will be the same. Furthermore, Perl was developed in a Unix environment, and is most native to Unix.
