You'd need to say

  push @{ $inBlock->{fields} }, $i;

But given your current function, it's far faster to say:

  sub setFields {
    my ($inBlock, @fieldList) = @_;
    $inBlock->{fields} = \@fieldList;
  }

or perhaps

  sub setFields {
    my $inBlock = shift;
    $inBlock->{fields} = [ @_ ];
  }
