If you want to use split, this will work:
my $DN =
'CN=EX-MSG-01,CN=Servers,CN=foreignlocation,CN=Administr...';
my ($server) = split ',', $DN; # 'CN=EX-MSG-01'
(undef, $server) = split '=', $server; # 'EX-MSG-01'
