The easiest way is to use localtime() in scalar context.
$ perl -le'
my $now = localtime;
print $now;
'
Mon May 16 12:31:07 2005
$ perl -le'
printf "The current date is %04d-%s-%02d\n",
( localtime =~ /(\w{3})\s+(\d+)\s+[\d:]{8}\s+(\d{4})/ )[ 2, 0, 1 ];
'
The current date is 2005-May-16
