Hi Andy,

Thanks Ray and Jeff. I feel a bit stupid and embarrassed now.

Nothing is stupid for a beginner. You can learn, and you will get started.

In my
defence, I did google, but several websites gave me different stories
which did not work..

For your case, Google is not the final solution.
You may want to buy a Perl book (ie,"learning Perl") and learn it from now.

Yes -- everything that Jeff said is spot-on. :-) The mailing list is for beginners and if we don't help beginners, then the name of the list has to change. :-)

As for Google, sometimes I have terrible experiences with Google. To find something, you need to know what it is called; if you are coming from another language (say, php), you might not know what it is called in Perl. The Perl documentation is "perldoc" and if you know you are searching for something Perl-ish, you might as well use the search function within perldoc (like that site I gave or as part of your distribution) rather than Perl.

Alternatively, Jeff's recommendation is a good one -- that's a good book. And flipping the pages of a book means you don't have to stare at a search box trying various word combinations.

Good luck with Perl!

Ray
