Subject: [desktop-discuss] Suggestion for Solaris
To: desktop-discuss at opensolaris.org
Team,
I hope I am writing into the correct discussion group for this. If
not, please excuse my error.
Last year I started using SXDE on my Panasonic Toughbook CF-29 (HCL
certified) for business here and overseas. More recently, I upgraded
to build 93 of SXCE. It's fantastic. I really find SXCE on my laptop
to be a good business productivity platform, with StarOffice be an
absolute 'must have'.
After reading and watching many interesting messages going around in
several of the discussion groups here, one thing was missing that I
want to add. Sun had been bundling a PDAsync application with Solaris.
However, with the Blackberry device being probably the fastest growing
wireless business solution on the market and growing fast in Europe, I
would like to suggest giving some serious thought to including a
Blackberry sync solution ithat can sync with Evolution ntegrated with
the Solaris desktop. Since 1989, I have worked in the Wall Street
banking/brokerage firms, which represents one of Sun's largest, if not
the largest, customer sites in the world. Solaris is the standard but
so is Blackberry. If there is a serious intent for Sun to get a good
desktop OS solution out there for the ever growing laptop users
community then it must also present itself as a business solution, and
the financial firms that live on Solaris would be the best starting
place. Solaris on a laptop
could deliver a great solution but it lacks support for a required
item, Blackberry.
There is a Blackberry application out there on sourceforge.net called
Barry, which runs on Solaris and syncs Blackberry devices. Perhaps
this application can be integrated into the Solaris desktop just as
many other GPL applications have been. Trust me on this, it would add
a lot of value to Solaris for the desktop user.
Hope this interests someone.
Regards,
Stuart
