The Bios can ID it but not everyone has access to the bios to set up the boot order. I have successfully used Slax linux which posts a CD image to boot the USB (Allows you to use the CD for other purposes like movie playing) and gets around the need to alter the Bios setup. I'll try this workaround and report back if it works. Would be great to have Solaris on my notebook computer.
