This could be some DRM weirdness as the log does not show any issues. KDE 4 likes to use 3D acceleration by default (if available) and causes the GLX module to be initialized. Looks like the ATI driver is acting up in this respect. Gnome does not use 3D features by default unless you have enabled Compiz. I will send you a VESA mode configuration in a separate email that should work properly without jerkiness.
