the default installation got from
$pfexec spkg install multimedia
has the following problem:
kunal431 at opensolaris:~$ mplayer
ld.so.1: mplayer: fatal: liblzo2.so.2: open failed: No such file or
directory
Killed

to resolve this issue install lzo-devel package from the repo
$pfexec spkg install lzo-devel

this should resolve the issue.
also the recent build of mplayer on 0.8 comes with VDPAU (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VDPAU ) enabled.
to see that run:
$mplayer -vo help

you should see

Available video output drivers:
        vdpau   VDPAU with X11
NOTE:

to use vdpau to run a video use
$*mplayer -vo vdpau -vc ffh264vdpau* <video files' path>
