I've personally tried nagios and didn't like! To monitor my network at 
home with 9 servers and various networking equipment I use Munin and Cacti.

If you want to check bandwidth and who is connected to your network then 
Ntop is a good idea; also awstats is great for web servers

.....but just my 2 cents worth :-)

I know there are many enterprise grade systems out there which you pay 
for and researching those might be more usefull if you need something 
specifically or to work at a certain level/grade. {depends on what you 
want out of them really - provided that you have given that information 
already!! however is really just preference in my opinion}
