Sorry guys, I have been distracted the last few days -- if this is a smartmontools question please repeat it -- I can probably answer easily.

Cheers,

the machine I checked has 5.33, and 5.36 is the date on the sources I grabbed in early dec. the machine in question is running HP XC 3.0, based on RHEL4's 2.6.9 - obviously with some backports.

Device does not support SMART

well, afaikt, that's actually a pretty recent sata disk, and certainly
does support SMART. might you need smartctl -e? some bioses offer an
option to en/disable smart, but afaikt -e fixed that.

nitrogen:~# smartctl -d sata -a /dev/sda

I needed -d ata on my system. (libata, which has always been intended
to support both parallel and serial - and is now the preferred driver for some pata disks...)
