I updated the BIOS on the 244's and the problem appears to have gone away. I should have done this long ago, but I had mistakenly thought that I couldn't PXE boot the flash update utility. It's also somewhat gratifying to understand a bit more what the issue was.

So, those of you with Tyan S2882s, update your bios!
