That has not been our experience.  We have been running Myrinet (a couple of 
different generations) for over six years on about 80 hosts, in a facility with 
poor environmentals (power, cooling, humidity), and have lost only one switch 
port and one NIC in all that time.  That seems about as reliable as anything 
you're likely to find.
