Interesting, but depressing, presentation. At HotInterconnects in 2011, Intel gave a presentation about the reductions in power per flop over time. The corresponding communication power consumption per bit was flat (no improvement). Projecting the trends forward and with a 20 Mw power budget, an exascale machine's network would consume all the power leaving nothing for computation. -- This is why the interest in free-space optical interconnects: no loss in the transport medium. Also, "direct node to node" interconnect without cables and connectors means you don't need power to run the line drivers/receivers or run the computation to do the adaptive equalizations.
