Well, there goes the theory that dogs can't get salmonella!

Subject: Update on Porter

Hi all,

For those of you who remember early last week I was asking for your kind
advice regarding diarrhea in my 5 month old Berner boy. Well, the
results are in from the culture done at the University of Guelph ...
salmonella poisoning!!!!!!! Porter is absolutely fine now (has been
since Friday), but it's very scary. Our vet told us that we are very
lucky that Porter is such a strong boy, otherwise he could have had very
serious health effects & potentially death. Because of Porter's poop
eating habits (not his own - deer, coyote, rabbit, fox, etc.) our vet
thinks he got it from that.

Does anyone know of anything we can do to stop this nasty habit? I do
not want to see this happen again, we may not be so lucky. When Porter
is on his leash in the immediate yard we are able to control - however,
as we live on a large, rural acreage, Porter is taken on frequent
off-leash runs (supervised of course) through the fields and forests.
Today, for the most part, I was able to distract him with yummy treats,
but am still concerned that we won't always be able to. Any
suggestions?

Also, could raw weiners be the cause of the salmonella? I've been using
a combo of weiners & cheese while training (he loves them!!). Should I
cook the weiners? or take him off weiners altogether?

Thanks,
Jennifer
