The Ridgefield Berner Walk was aired Friday morning on Martha Stewart's 9 am show and seemed to cover all aspects of the morning gathering from the "blessing of the Berners" the actual walk, the owner's home and dog, and the food and joviality.  We were glad we took our mutt Guinness as well as our Berner Pebbles because it was hard to pick out one's own Berner in all the crowd, the shots were so rapid and of course, every lovely dog looked much the same through the fleeting camera lens.  Once we spotted Guinness, we knew where to look!  Hope most of you managed to get to see the show.

Anyone have a vWD clinic running or coming up? Someone asked me about it
at
the show the other day. Just missed one that closed in FL.

Moses "demanded" to go on a walkie early this AM and remained upright better than I did, due to yesterday's snow!
What an amazing dog!

The puppy clamoring started at 5 this morning, and sounded insistent so I
got up and walked the few steps to my study where all ten puppies were busy
squishing a puppy pile between their toes and then jumping on the walls of
the whelping box. A special puppy Happy Thanksgiving :)

I relayed the puppies, two at a time, to the puppy patio where Abra nurses
them in the morning and got busy on the box. I managed to get the walls
clean with an old toothbrush. The used newspaper in the garbage, the dirty
fleece in the wash and then it was time to relay the puppies to the play
area that used to be our living room. It is now covered with a sheet of
linoleum and enclosed with an xpen. The floor is covered with the latest in
puppy toys -- boxes, plastic milk jug, stuffed toys of various
denominations, two cats, and so on.

Unfortunately the puppies decided it was breakfast time -- RIGHT NOW. They
tell me this by initiatin g a practice session of the Salt Lake City Puppy
Choir -- I got the message, and so did my sleeping husband who woke up
wondering if I
was torturing the poor puppies. No -- just heating their breakfast of cooked
stew meat, chicken, rice, yogurt, veggies, etc much too slowly to suit the
puppies. I feed them on separate plates to allow the slow eaters to get as
much as the speedy ones, so it is a relay of filling plates, ensuring that
good manners are practiced (i.e., no stealing!), relaying fed puppies out to
the puppy yard, refilling the plates and so on. The ones who are waiting do
not do so with any patience. When it is over, I take the pan used to heat
the meal to the patio
and let the puppies clean it up for me -- they seem to enjoy this new
responsibility :)

It is cold here so as soon as puppies begin to slow down, they have to come
right in to the area previously known as the living room. Another puppy
relay and soon they are all playing with cats, stuffed berners, boxes and
etc. One by one they head over to designated sleeping areas and drop off. By
the time the last one heads off to dreamland, one hour and forty minutes has
elapsed.

My days (and nights!) are filled with hours just like these. I am thankful
that I have the
opportunity to spend eight weeks with these wonderful puppies. As a hopeless
overachiever, it takes a lot to raise a litter in the way that I think it
ought to be done but the time is passing too quickly and soon the puppies
will head off to their new homes, except the one who will be chosen to stay
with us.

Today I will again think of the puppies born in cages, who do not have
anyone to relay them
to a warm living room and who are never cuddled by teenage boys watching
television.
I will reflect on my responsibilities to those who do not have the abundance
that
we have in our home -- human and animals. And I will remember that to whom
much is
given, much is expected and I will write a check for those puppies whose
sweet faces I cannot kiss.

Happy Thanksgiving to all of you.
