Hi Karen, While there is criticism about the number of "legitimate" puppies registered in the US there is actually a shortage of puppies available for the pet buying public that desire a Berner. Given that and the must have now mentality that many people have the pet stores do a booming trade. If the pet store trade is spaying and neutering baby puppies then it is done not for the preservation of the breed by limiting poor quality dogs from being bred but more ensuring that market price will be kept high.
