Gayle,
Sounds like you already came up w/ a perfect solution, regular appointments
at the doggie spa (groomers)!

But if you ever wanted to try it yourself again, do what the groomers do.
Just tether him. I have 2 leashes w/ hooks and put the dog between the two so
he cant go far. I am gentle and patient, I talk calmly to him, I simply
ignore the really wild and crazy behavior, I give lots of treats when he is
still .....and he really doesnt have any choice, he is stuck. "Resistance is
futile!"

For outside bathing, just take his leash and close it tightly in the car
door, so he only has like one foot of free leash. He cant go anywhere. His
collar needs to be snug of course, one he cant slip. He really will have no
choice but to get clean and fresh, he cant go anywhere. Eventually he will
learn that bathing isnt such horrible thing!

And the car gets washed at the same time. :-)
