Today Orla's (aka Ch Sennenhof Orla) is 10! Orla was a pistol as a pup. She told our then 6 year old, 100 lb, dominant male, that at 8 weeks of age she was going to be boss, which she was and still is. Orla was a power chewer and destroyed every toy they ever made. She had the top off a "guaranteed" Kong in less than 15 minutes. I can't tell you how many socks that girl has swallowed whole in her life time.
Nothing Orla does is ever at half speed or quantity. She had three litters (9, 12 & 10) all natural births and all pups born alive and healthy. The longest delivery was one pup in her last litter took 11 minutes from her first contraction to delivery. She still enjoys the odd sock which she will now suck on rather than swallow. However, in the last year she has found a new trick.......open the bread drawer and eat an entire loaf of bread or for her next trick steal it off the counter while leaving other items in place. Now you may not think this is a great trick but remember this is a ten year old dog who is so slow coming back into the house when called. How could she possibly take the entire bakery order off the counter? After all isn't she the dog that stands and waits for help up into the van which is much lower to the ground than a counter top. So it must be magic. She does leave some less than fresh items for the humans so they don't notice the bread is gone. Also if they (the humans) are just in the other room you must do all this without making a sound. Whoever said you can't teach old dogs new tricks did not use bread as a training aid.
