We had a keeshond who had this luxating patella, but the odd thing
was that she only held her leg up when standing still and never limped.
In fact, she could RUN with no problems for quite a while with this
problem. The vet wanted to operate, but we made a decision not
to. She had just taken 6 months at age 13 to recover from hip
surgery which was certainly NOT optional and had just gotten
out of her depression from that about a year before. She was
14 1/2 and lived another 1 1/2 years with this without any obvious
pain or trouble. Eventually we euthanized her at 16 due to
arthritis elsewhere - unrelated to her patella problem. It never
seemed to cause her pain.

In addition, when I was a child, I remember we had a small dog
with this (a heinz 57) which we never had operated on and it caused
hardly any problem for her - no pain and she only limped VERY rarely.
Seemed to be caused by jumping off a tall bed.
