Hello! I just joined Berner-L a few days ago because a beloved friend of mine is
devastated and I want to see if anyone can help us. Her short letter follows
below; we can provide any details that anyone needs. She isn't very computer-
literate so I told her I would join Berner-L and ask for help. I have had Akitas
for over 20 years, but have loved and enjoyed her Berners and love to watch
Bernese Mountain Dogs when I can at shows. Her loss is mine, and I miss her
dogs desperately :(. At any rate, we are grateful for any insight anyone can
give...believe me, her first boy had every medical test known. He was her heart
dog, and months have not dulled his loss. :(

I had four dogs living in the same house, drinking out of the same
water and living the same life. Age varied from 3 through 9. Two of
the dogs were berners the other two were each different breeds. One of
the berners started having what were considered back spasms. He would
hunch up like a cat , arched at the middle of the back, head down and
tail tucked up under him. X-rays and blood work showed nothing. The
spasms would happen for a day or two and then be gone for 6 or 7
months, then the process would start again. This went on for three and
a half years then the spasms got out of control they could not be
stopped and he was put down. In the meantime we were given a dog
related to him but not of the same breeding. Then the first dogs
litter sister showed the same symptoms one morning and was dead
within the month, this was presumed to be a heart attack. Four
months later the third berner started showing the same symptoms , age
three. Meanwhile the other dogs in the household (not berners) are
fine. Has anyone out there had anything that sounds like this happen
or have any information on what this could be.
