Mary Ann, When I got my BARC baby, Star, the chip had already migrated down her side (towards her butt). I was told not to worry about it that the dogs are scanned with the chip migrating in mind. About once a year I ask my Vet. clinic to scan for the chip. I do this for two reasons.... First to be sure that it is still readable and second that it is findable. I will be interested in hearing what others have to say about your question though.
