Hi Alison: I buy 60 pounds of beef neck bones from the meat market every
two weeks. I also have the butcher cut up beef femur bones. My dogs begin
eating bones as early as 8 weeks. My youngest Berner is 3 months old and
she gets a bone after her breakfast meal, each morning. I only feed bones
AFTER a meal. Juliette Levy, in her book THE COMPLETE HERBAL HANDBOOK FOR
THE DOG AND CAT, says "Bones should be fed after meals only, not given on an
empty stomach when they could puncture an intestine or create intestinal
gas." Levy's book was first printed in 1955, so her wisdom is deep rooted
in experience.

I also feed pork neck bones on occasion. I PERSONALLY do not like feeding
rib bones as I think they splinter easily.

I feed an all raw diet and grind up chicken, bone and all, which I feed with
raw juiced vegetables. 'Recreational bones', as mentioned above are fed
after their morning meal.
