We went to Exchange 2010 from 2003, Win Server 2008 from 2003 and 64-bit and
Hyper-V for our Exchange environment.
We needed to upgrade BES from 4.1.6 to 5.0, then 5.1 but stayed with Win Server
2003 on that machine.

Get compatible versions from Blackberry support for Exchange 2010 and O/S
changes you are considering. I opened a ticket with support and got everything
I needed back in an email.
The upgrade(s) for BES went OK, but I'd recommend doing it when your support is
available just in case. When I do upgrades, sometimes it doesn't recognize the
install from disk. I had to cleanup previous old versions before the upgrade
would work.
In combination with the Exchange 2010 upgrade, you have to change a value for
something called 'throttling' on the exchange machine, there are tech articles
with instruction (KB20608 is what I used but there could be something newer).
Again, Blackberry support can help.
You also have to re-create the BES MAPI profile. I used KB10285, but there
might be something newer. There was an order to this too but I can't find my
notes right now.
The only other thing that didn't work for us was that we tried to put in a MS
product called TMG as a frontend for Exchange services and it broke any BIS
connection back to the Exchange 2010 domain mailboxes. AT&T (our service
provider) connection wasn't compatible with newest MS changes. So, we
implemented without TMG.

Go to 2008
64-bit
Personally, I'm a fan of a knife-edge to a new OS instance

Overall experience: get ready to learn how to administer BES all over again
with the BAS / webconsole.

I'd highly recommend reading the install guide in its entirety and give the
system admin guide a good review ... you won't have any "gotchas" if you do

Subject: [Bes-admins] Upgrading to BES v5

We'll be upgrading our domain to 2008 and to Exchange 2010. I was wondering if
anyone could give some insight as to your experiences with going to 2008 domain
and/or Exchange 2010 with BES.

At the same time I'll be upgrading our BES from v4 to v5. What recommendations
do you have about going to BES v5. Would you recommend it being on 2008? 32 or
64bit? In place upgrade? Overall experiences migrating from BES v4 to v5.

thanks
