C:\j601_64> "C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_07\bin\javaw.exe" -jar j.jar
worked fine!
Now I have to find out how to start from the icon.

The command line you give in your message is not quite right. You don't want
quotes around "-jar j.jar". Not sure if this is the
problem, but please try:

C:\j601_64> "C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_07\bin\javaw.exe" -jar j.jar

If that doesn't work verify that the path is correct.

Try (note java.exe not javaw.exe) to get the version:

C:\j601_64> "C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_07\bin\java.exe" -version

I also just noted that in my last install of the java amd64 version that the
install did update the file association for j.jar to be
with the 64 bit java. If this is the case on your install then just doing
the following should work:

C:\j601_64>j.jar
