You don't want quotes around "-jar j.jar". Try (note java.exe not javaw.exe) to get the version: C:\j601_64> "C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_07\bin\java.exe" -version I also just noted that in my last install of the java amd64 version that the install did update the file association for j.jar to be with the 64 bit java.
