Reading header, or whichever the API has to do
short of getting pixels can be done.

Saving to some image formats is also possible,
but I was thinking, as will zip files, that
it could be better done is special software,
such as earlier mentioned XnView,
unless you are writing such software in J.

Finding a standard platform solution for Linux is
not an easy task. The closest I was able to
find gdk_pixmap. Does anybody have an opinion
of it?

There is a more advanced addon: image3, which
can handle saving to some formats with options.
But it does not suport GIF, or other platform and
general formats, such as TIFF or ICO.
