Reading header, or whichever the API has to do short of getting pixels can be done.
Saving to some image formats is also possible, but I was thinking, as will zip files, that it could be better done is special software, such as earlier mentioned XnView, unless you are writing such software in J. Finding a standard platform solution for Linux is not an easy task. The closest I was able to find gdk_pixmap. Does anybody have an opinion of it? There is a more advanced addon: image3, which can handle saving to some formats with options.
